And The New Eustace Tilley Tote Bag Is…
Last night, we announced the grand-prize winner of the 2012 Eustace Tilley Contest—he is Landis Blair, a twenty-eight-year-old freelance illustrator and “closet author” from Waukegan, Illinois. Of the three-hundred-plus entries submitted this year by our readers, we selected twelve finalists back in February. There was a crayon Eustace drawn by the ninety-nine-year-old Alma Mitchell, who lives at the Olympia West Inn retirement home in Tumwater, Washington. (Paul Steucke, a volunteer art teacher at the home, assigned the contest to his art class.) Another Eustace, by Brett Culbert, a landscape historian, was published as the cover of our eighty-seventh Anniversary Issue. Landis Blair’s image, “Go Read a Book,” is the grand winner—chosen for how it gently mocks book readers—and was selected to be turned into a book bag.
